On December 30, 2015, the Department of Defense issued a new interim rule amending the Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement (DFARS) to implement the security control requirements specified by National Institute of Standards and Technology Special Publication 800-171 (SP 800-171). Contractors have until December 31, 2017 to comply with these new requirements.
